Shotgun Tom Kelly writes: “An 8-mm sound film was found of me at age 23 when I was on the air at 136/KGB! You get great shots of how San Diego looked like in 1972 as I drive to work on Highway 94. If you are a radio tower fan, you can see the Navy towers in this film. They are gone now.”
Shotgun Tom remains one of the most famous radio personalities from the market.
He adds, “A fantastic shot of the old KGB sign that for years was on 4141 Pacific Highway right across from MCRD.”
Wes Owen who was at KUSI made the film over 30-years agon on a super 8-mm camera and a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder. Shotgun adds that Wes put a sound stripe on the edited film and then he synchronized two seperate sources to create the film.
Tony Pepper of On Music, On Sound in Santa Monica converted the film to digital, and see it here.

Catalina Island is about 75 miles north west of San Diego. There is the transmitting home for KBRT-AM, a day-time religious station that fills the Southern California airwaves with 10,000 watts. The engineers produce a newsletter that is available on line here. Although authorized for night time operation, the station signs off at sunset when KCBS from San Francisco booms in from northern California.
The transmitter and house is located outside of Avalon, northwest of the popular tourist spot.
The station is unusual for its off-shore broadcasting. Formally the home of a beautiful music staiton, KBRT was bought by Crawford Broadcasting in 1980. The station also uses HDRadio
The towers can be viewed at Google Maps.

Sonny added, “Here it is Tuesday, and I’m feeling pretty good. Weak, but good.”
He will return to the KyXy morning show on Groundhog’s Day, Feb. 2. He quipped, “I hope the events don’t reoccur!”
Sonny adds, “During the process leading up to the angioplasty, I wasn’t too frightened or worried –was getting great care at Sharp Grossmount. It wsn’t until after the procedure that the cardiologist explained my condition to me.” Sonny said that the doctor “referred to the blockage in my artery as the “widow maker” and patients don’t usually survive this kind of problem. Then the severity of it all set in. I am truly lucky to be here and able to make a return to the KyXy Morning show.”

What has “former” San Diego 1700 morning host and program director Mark Larson been up to these days? He’s popping up on KUSI television often and has been hearing from radio stations and networks about new possibilities.
In the meantime, he’s “busier than ever with commercial work, PR and media consulting.” His SpeakersGroup.net agency is growing. The group has additional clients including Gene Cernan, the “Last Man on the Moon” (Mark runs his website: www.genecernan.com).
This weekend, Mark’s off to Northern California with Cernan and his Apollo 10 crew for the anniversary celebration of the space mission. He will be the master of the ceremonies on the opening the new Apollo 10 exhibit at the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa.
Mark tells SDRadio that there’s a “Peanuts” connection: The Apollo command module was nicknamed “Charlie Brown” and the lunar lander “Snoopy”. Larson and Cernan have also expanded their business relationship in other endeavors as well. It’s a big year for space-related activities with the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing coming up in July.
Mark sent in a rare gathering as photographed. Neil Armstrong rarely does public appearances and in an extreme rare chance, the first and last men on the moon were in San Diego recently. Alan Bean (Apollo 12 and set record in space on Skylab); Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11, first man to walk on the moon), Mark (still grounded and was master of ceremonies at an event) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 & 17; last man on the moon). The American heroes made an appearance last month at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Country fans rejoiced in North County when KSON began to relay on 92.1 FM. The FM station has had a long history with country music as KOWF-FM.
Astor Broadcasting had the FM station in a small Escondido strip mall, and the station had a very strong following. When the original KFSD at 94.1 gave way to The Eagle, classical music landed at 92.1. It survived for a couple of years then Premium 92/1 under Mike Halloran made an impact.
Economics of scale played out, and the station was sold to Jefferson Pilot and the station has been the North County home of Cliff and Company, Kimo Jensen, Nick Upton, Brooks O’Brien, Greg Cook, and others.
The station’s transmitter is on Mount Whitney, near California State San Marcos. With 580 Watts, the antenna is at 1,600 feet above sea level. The signal is also has HDRadio. The transmitter is in the lower right hand corner of the picture. The antenna is also the home of several low powered television stations and a major mobile phone transition point.
Find the antenna on Google Maps.

The radio station was originally owned by Family Radio, that owns KECR-AM 910. The FM station was sold to then-Jacor Broadcasting. For a time, the station relayed The Dove, an FM easy listening station. San Diego also got a taste of Bubba The Love Sponge as the station shifted musical directions.
Now it is one of the top rated stations in San Diego.

It is about the music at FM 94/9. The station has been on air, on the internet, and now it is available for the iPhone.
“In an ever-evolving world, FM 94/9 continues to innovate as the first station in San Diego to offer this technology to its listeners. The App puts FM 94/9 directly on the iPhone desktop, instead of being buried in a list with hundreds of other radio stations. With one tap of the finger, a listener can easily stream FM 94/9 anywhere they have wireless internet access, even when out of the range of the terrestrial signal.
“We are excited to be able to provide this new listening application for FM 94/9 listeners. As a radio station that strives to be on the technology forefront, we believe that this will be a great way for our local San Diego audience to be able to take FM 94/9 wherever they go using the most popular mobile device,” said Garett Michaels, FM 94/9 Program Director.
~~
John Fox, whose radio history is known at B100 and other stations, write’s about last week’s look at 107.1 FM in Fallbrook. “KAVO almost literally operated on a “shoestring” when it went on the air in 1977. The original antenna was a dipole… just like the crummy little FM antennas that come with a home stereo receiver, only on a bigger scale. It was just a wire strung between two telephone poles with another one dropping down from the middle and hooked up to the transmitter. You’d look at it and say, “This is a professional commercial radio station?” There were CB base stations at the time that had fancier antennas (and more power – illegally of course). But that’s how they put the whole shebang on the air thirty-two years ago for about $100k including studios.” John adds, “I know all this because I was Program Director for the competing license applicant in ’75.”
See last Friday’s posting about 107.1 FM.

Josh Rosenburg and Brian Wilson remain at Xtra Sports 1360. Josh is the afternoon host and Brian is the PD. Stay Tuned. (Perhaps Russell can get his coffee now.)
~~
Radio Notes: Who is the golden voice heard overnight on KyXy ……. Radio pro Mark Larson was on KUSI’s Sunday morning show. Today, KCBQ evening host Rick Amato stops by the news set. Topic, radio of course ….. With Roger Hedgecock’s show national, some San Diego listeners are writing that the local feel is gone. Could this erode from the Radio Mayor’s hold on afternoon drive? …. Despite the ground beating, no Air America station surfaced in the market this month …… NBC 7/39 ran a video story on the San Diego firings at Clear Channel, see their archives for the story.

Thank you for making SDRadio part of your broadcast day. See YOU on the radio today, and here later in the week. Fifth caller wins ….
No trees were sacrificed in the dissemination of this blog; SDRadio regrets that a large number of electrons were inconvenienced. No CRV outside of California.

KSSD-FM is part of a trio of stations broadcasting at 107.1 FM. The San Diego County base of the trio is in Fallbrook. The FM tower is near I-15 and the south side of Mission Avenue. The two other stations at 107.1 are located in Arcadio as KSSE, and KSSC in Ventura. The Spanish-language station is known as “Superestrella”. The web page is located here.
As KSSD, the station was once the home of Y107, an alternative rocker; and a foreign language religious station. It was also the home of KAVO, giving a nod to the avocado that reigns in the area.
The station is 3,000 watts, has HDRadio service.

CCSD Update
The entire group of those dismissed for doing their job at San Diego’s Clear Channel Communications is larger than the list that appeared at the web site earlier this week.
KGB’s morning host Dave Rickards said on Wednesday and today that there is a possibility of having Ruth 66 back on air. He is talking to management at the station to see what that would entail.
(Earlier today, Dave suggested that he would fire the Telos phone and it would be added to the list at SDRadio.)
Several folks have stressed while it “sucks to lose my job” that Clear Channel’s release package included benefits and money for some time. Specifics are not publicly known, but is most likely tied to an SEC filed paper that the company did.
For those on the beach, best wishes! For the managers who had to do the tough stuff on Tuesday, best wishes as well. See you on the radio!

KKSM-AM is a station licensed to Oceanside, and is a broadcast service of Palomar Community College.
The station’s three tower array is on Oceanside Boulevard near an industrial park and right in the midst of an RV parking center, and a car wash. It is next to an auto parts store. The 500 watt directional station is authorized for 24-hour a day service to the North County area.
Part of the 1320 history is that Art Bell once called this station home for a while. Bell went on to Las Vegas and launched Coast to Coast AM

It’s never easy to report the dismissal of radio folks. Yesterday’s downsizing at Clear Channel Communications in San Diego wasn’t easy either. For those managers who had to deliver the news there was a burden. AllAccess has it right: “Now 1,850 People Have To Restructure Their Lives.” Long time radio veterans joined those who had been at the station for a short time — on the unemployed field.
The field is not level.
It’s not any easier for managers to tell their loyal workers that there services will not be needed any more. When done, there is a hole in the workforce; there’s a hole in the former-workers heart. There’s a hole in the broadcast day.
The county ear witnessed an entire station’s air staff leave except for two in the afternoon. Xtra Sports 1360 has one local show, with Josh Rosenberg and program director Brian Wilson. The rest of the day is Dan Patrick in the mornings and Fox Sports for the majority of the day. KLAC-AM 570’s staff jumped into the national spotlight as most of their one air staff morphed to Fox Sports. Dan Patrick said this morning he had 60-new radio outlets as of today.
Locally the list includes Craig Elsten of Xtra Sports 1360, Ditch and Ruth 66 of KGB, Zethian Oats at Rock 105.3, and Sean “Sonic” Leckie of Channel 93.3. Also in the mix is Abromowitz from KGB.
At this time, Clear Channel is in survival mode. It’s not doomsday; but survival. The company gave a fair separation package and that should buy those displaced some time before the realities of finding a job in the economy is felt.
Best wishes to all those involved: staff and management at Clear Channel; and those who are on the beach looking for work. I hope to “see you” on the radio very soon.

Update:
Mark Mays sent out: “We have thought carefully and at some length about the steps we need to take as a company to succeed during this unprecedented downturn. As a result, we have eliminated approximately 1,850 positions across Corporate, Outdoor and Radio. While a significant portion of these positions represent a realignment in our sales departments, the positions span all departments and represent approximately 9% of the total CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS workforce.
“Please know that these have been difficult decisions — yet necessary ones. We will miss those who are departing — even as we renew our shared commitment to success among all of us who will stay.
“Please know that we continue to be extraordinarily appreciative of all of the passion and hard work that each of you continues to commit to this phenomenal business. We will get through this together.”
Except for those 1,850 are are not with Clear Channel as of today.
Those gone from the line up include:
Nina Rheba “Ruth 66″, KGB
Bobbie Hill KGB 101.5 FM
Cathy O’Brien, sales manager
Tim Stemler, sales manager,
Jason Courtemanche, 933 sales manager
Jay Isbell, promotions director KGB and Rock 105.3
Dana Swanson assistant
Jamie Jackson, Star 94.1 sales
Steven Marsh, XTRA sales

Mike Costa, XTRA Sports
Jeff Dotseth, XTRA Sports
Matt Gulbransen, XTRA Sports (Producer)
Ditch, 101.5 KGB, afternoon host
Chris Ello, XTRA Sports
Mark Evans, KOGO News Director
Some insiders suggest 35-folks were let go today.
Only local show at KGB-FM: Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw.

Kenny Goldberg, longtime health reporter for KPBS, received one of the prestigious Kaiser Fellowships in Global Health Reporting for 2009. The annual fellowship, awarded to 16 journalists this year, awards up to $10,000 for expenses relating to a specific project.
The fellowship program supports the broader effort to report and inform the public of major health issues in the U.S. and throughout the world. Journalists are encouraged to research medical, social, economic, political and cultural implications of these issues.
Goldberg’s project will examine the impact of needle exchange programs in combating Hepatitis C. The city of New York has one of the nation’s most comprehensive programs to combat hepatitis C among people at highest risk.
“My series will examine how the program operates in New York and whether it’s helping to curb the spread of hepatitis C. I’ll also look into the comparative lack of services in San Diego County, and how this situation is putting people at risk of contracting hepatitis C,” says Goldberg.
“This is a story that has a lot of fascinating elements: medicine, the intersection between science and politics, and public policy towards drug addicts. And at the core of this story is an infectious disease that is a major public health threat,” says Goldberg.
Goldberg has been a reporter with KPBS since 1997. He has earned numerous awards, including several Golden Mikes and honors form the Society of Professional Journalists and the San Diego Press Club. Kenny is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists.
KPBS is a public service of San Diego State University, serving the region with TV, radio, and Internet content that is educational as well as entertaining- and free of commercial interruption.
San Diego radio veteran Mark Larson will make his first public appearance since the unexpected changes at BCA’s “San Diego 1700″. He’ll be the January 22, keynote speaker for Fairbanks Republican Women Federated, one of the largest groups of its kind in America, about current events and media issues.
On January 31st he’ll MC a special event at the Charles Schulz Museum and Research Center in Northern California featuring former astronauts Gene Cernan and Tom Stafford.
(Mark pictured with “Original 7″ astronaut Scott Carpenter, on the set of “Star Trek” at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.)

Despite inquiries, Tony and Kris have not resurfaced this month. There was some indication that the former morning team from New Country 95.7 might land at an area station. Also, no word from MEC Broadcasting about the forty-percent pay cut. Lastly …. no comment from Clear Channel in San Antonio about the proposed moves today; however last night, CC-LA folks were receiving calls to “attend a morning meeting”. Stay Tuned.

Monday, January 19, 2009 by SDRadio.
On Tuesday, as the nation welcomes the 44th President of the United States into office, another chapter is being written by industry giant Clear Channel Communications.
The communications company, as with most broadcast groups, are in a survival mode. To make it through the recession, the business rules have to change. Numbers, marked nationwide, range from 1,000 to 1,700 folks to loose their job. This also includes the billboard, and other groups that Clear Channel has. That may come down to one person per station in the radio group. However the wires have been pointing to a more national-service on music. That could mean a long-goodbye to local shows as they are being replaced by nationally produced programs. Ryan Seacrest’s mid-day show on Star 94.1 could be the norm.
What ever happens, folks will lose their position just for doing their job. What Clear Channel is doing, despite the verbal darts from the gallery, is surviving the economic downturn. Most companies across the U.S. are in the same mode, survival. Unfortunately, people lose their job through no fault of their own.
What ever happens in the events on Tuesday, the available work pool will increase and more folks will be trying to work in a medium that has fewer openings, or openings that didn’t pay like they did even one year ago. As the retrench continues, this could be an opportunity for other stations in the market to pick up the “live and local” approach.
As the biggest radio group in the nation, Clear Channel may set the course for others. Let’s hope that live and local stays on.
Thank you for reading … and for those Clear Channel workers effected, best wishes. Stay in touch.
