San Diego’s radio ratings entered the 21st century yesterday with the release of the PPM readings from Arbitron. The ratings are gathered by a device that “hears” special tones and sends the information back to the company computers.

A pleasant surprise as Channel 933 vaulted to the top of the radio stack with a 5.9 share. The Clear Channel station is closely followed by Magic 92.5-FM.

A nice surprise to BCA’s Walrus-FM. The oldies station is the third most listened to radio station in the market in the 12-plus area.

Classic rocker KGB-FM and KiFM round out the top five.

News talkers KOGO is the top AM station in town. It is ahead of KFMB, and LA-based KFI.

Top Spanish language station honors go to AC XELTN-FM, Radio Latino.

The San Diego market’s last ratings from a diary was at the end of April, and prior to that, some stations shifted programming in advance of the Portable People Meter marketed and used by Arbitron.

Alternative wars has FM 94/9 over cross-town rival 91X.

Noted: KPBS-FM is the tenth most listened to station in the market. KFMB-AM and KFMB-FM are tied. The AM features conservative talk, while Jack is control of the FM side.

LA-based stations continue to have an impact. Not only are KFI and KNX showing up on the AM side of the house, KEARTH, KLAC, KSYR, and KROQ have an impact, especially in North County.

Happy Birthday to Sonny West at KyXy radio. The morning host at 96.5 FM had a rough start to the year with a 100-percent blockage in his heart. Now seen frequently on the hiking trails of San Diego, this birthday is especially nice!
