Welcome to SDRadio for Thursday, July 30, 2009
KOGO’s Program Director Cliff Albert marks 30-years in the radio market today! Known for his news duties in the market, it began across town at KFMB-AM 760.
1170 KCBQ’s Mark Larson writes about Cliff. “Yup, this week marks his 30th anniversary in San Diego radio! Paul Palmer and I hired him back in 1979. He couldn’t move until his wife had their second child (nice timing). So it wasn’t until July that he pulled into town to begin his historic tenure at KFMB.”
Mark continues, “I hired him in 79, then 25 years later he hired me at KOGO. So I figure that next time, in 2029 it’ll be my turn to hire Cliff again. Even though we might not have a clue what we’re doing by then. Clearly, no one else has the news savvy he has, and Clear Channel’s very fortunate to have him.”

At KOGO, he writes and produces his “Cliff Notes on the News” news commentaries. These are heard weekday mornings on KOGO, and have won top awards including several Golden Mics. He has won numerous local and national awards for journalism excellence from the San Diego Press Club, the Associated Press and United Press International. (Photo: Mark Larson and Cliff at KFMB-AM in 1979)
He also has earned a National Headliners Club Award and an International Radio-TV News Directors Association Award. Cliff also has been honored by the San Diego Press Club as recipient of the award for “Enlightened News Management”.
Throughout the years Cliff was one of the first persons on air when “something happened” in the area when at KFMB and presently at KOGO. From earthquakes, 9/11, and raging fires, Cliff was the sounding board, and the calming voice when calamity came here to roost. He can also be heard behind the mic as a talk show host, and the above mentioned “Cliff Notes on the News”. (Photo: Cliff, Mark, and Geni Cavitt celebrating Thanksgiving on the Mayflower (moving van).)
In an industry that at best is a roller coaster ride, to mark three decades in the same market is indeed, a milestone. Sample his notes at Cliff’s page at KOGO.

hEAR Wax: Does KSON’s Kimo Jensen have hair to dye for? ….. His wife, Shannon Leder is heard weekends at KPRi-FM 102.1. … Former radio talk show host Stacy Taylor can be heard via podcast. His musings are available for download at StacyTaylor.com. … What’s up with Jeff and Jer at Star 94.1? Will they, as Tom Blair suggest, fade out at the end of August, or will they resign at Clear Channel. Or will they follow the bouncing ball? Most likely, they will be on air waves on San Diego come September. Their present contract ends next month …. Stay Tuned.

Dave’s Hipp: Dave Rickards, mild mannered host of KGB’s morning show, has been heard of LA stations! He is the spokesman of an area boat dealer. The ads, which started in the past week, shows how diverse the host is.
Noted: Cookie Chainsaw Randolph’s quest to have Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) in studio could happen today. Some think it may be on the same scale that the Padres win the west this year. It could happen. Some people see the glass as half full. Others see it as half empty. Jack Bauer sees the glass as a deadly weapon.
~~
Mark Larson will have California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on at about 8:05 a.m. Remember to adjust the radio to 1170 KCBQ. Topics include the recent budget “deal” and all things Arnold. The governor is a regular on Mark’s show.
~~
It started out as a joke, and it went viral. On off the cuff remark had KCBQ’s call letters moving to Riverside County because they were under-utilized. while the remark was quickly proved as a joke, the info hit the net and went world wide. 1170 KCBQ remains in San Diego, and is at 50,000 watts from its broadcast location in East County. Part of Salem Radio, KCBQ recently re-introduced Mark Larson to the morning airwaves. Add in local-late night programming from Rick Amato, and the big guns from Salem’s talk-chest, the station is anything but “under utilized”.
~~
Also noted is that Brian Whitman is very much alive, despite some pundits that pronounced his death earlier this week. Brian, a man of many voices, was once the morning show at 101.5 KGB with Jack Silver. Brian is currently doing work for Glen Beck, and for Rick Dees.

* The decline of opera talent in America and what is behind it.

Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, July 20, 2009.
John Van Zantethe public relations manager for Helen Woodward Animal Center demonstrated what 15-minutes in the car can do. Last Thursday, he climbed inside a car to prove that the heat outside is worse in a car.
On a hot day, the heat inside your vehicle is a death trap for people and pets!In just 15 minutes, the heat rose to 128 degrees. That “Quick” stop for a refreshing drink, could turn into a deadly stop, for people and your pets!
Trisha St. George, from the Animal Center writes, “I didn’t want him to do it, but he insisted. “If it saves just one life…it’s worth it!” Awww…geez…how fur-oic! It gets me every time.”
Pictured is John with the temp telling thermometer.

KCBQ’s Mark Larson will make a return trip to the Middle East, joining the San Diego- based USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). His morning radio show will originate exclusively from the ship beginning the week of August 17.
The ship and its Strike Group set out on a four month deployment in late May, supporting the people of Afghanistan, the U.S. Marines and coalition forces in Southern Afghanistan. More than 6,000 sailors are taking part in the assignment, and they’re backed by thousands of family members on the home front in San Diego.
This trip is Mark’s third to the area, having covered Iraq and the region in 2005 and on board the Reagan in the Persian Gulf (on the ship’s maiden deployment) in 2006. His radio broadcasts were the first long form talk shows from a Navy ship in a war zone, and he continued to make history with programs direct from Afghanistan after the Reagan assignment.
These special broadcasts are made possible through a partnership with the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The San Diego Air & Space Technology Center is official title sponsor for the project. The Museum’s President & CEO (and former Navy pilot) Jim Kidrick will accompany Mark on the trip and will be part of the daily radio programs.
“First and foremost,” notes Larson, “this is all about saluting everyone in the military, all branches. The Reagan Strike Group represents the fine quality of people serving America. I love this opportunity to share what they’re doing, put today’s news into context and perspective, and to encourage those who lay it all on the line every day.” He adds, “These special broadcasts also help connect those who are deployed with their loved ones back at home. It’s an honor to be part of this.”
Mark has a long history with the USS Ronald Reagan, going back to the ship’s commissioning in 2003 and continuing when it was home ported in San Diego the following year. He is also an Honorary Plankowner, signifying his connection with the original crew. (Top Picture: Then Captain (now Rear Admiral) Terry Kraft, in a 2006 photo from the USS Ronald Reagan on duty in the Middle East.)
The KCBQ broadcasts will air from 7-9 a.m., on August 19, 20, 21 and 24. There will also be special live progress reports on the way to and from the region.
(Bottom Picture: Neil Armstrong who rarely does public appearances and in an extreme rare chance, the first and last men on the moon were in San Diego recently. Alan Bean (Apollo 12 and set record in space on Skylab); Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11, first man to walk on the moon), Mark (still grounded and was master of ceremonies at an event) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 & 17; last man on the moon).)

San Diego’s radio ratings entered the 21st century yesterday with the release of the PPM readings from Arbitron. The ratings are gathered by a device that “hears” special tones and sends the information back to the company computers.
A pleasant surprise as Channel 933 vaulted to the top of the radio stack with a 5.9 share. The Clear Channel station is closely followed by Magic 92.5-FM.
A nice surprise to BCA’s Walrus-FM. The oldies station is the third most listened to radio station in the market in the 12-plus area.
Classic rocker KGB-FM and KiFM round out the top five.
News talkers KOGO is the top AM station in town. It is ahead of KFMB, and LA-based KFI.
Top Spanish language station honors go to AC XELTN-FM, Radio Latino.
The San Diego market’s last ratings from a diary was at the end of April, and prior to that, some stations shifted programming in advance of the Portable People Meter marketed and used by Arbitron.
Alternative wars has FM 94/9 over cross-town rival 91X.
Noted: KPBS-FM is the tenth most listened to station in the market. KFMB-AM and KFMB-FM are tied. The AM features conservative talk, while Jack is control of the FM side.
LA-based stations continue to have an impact. Not only are KFI and KNX showing up on the AM side of the house, KEARTH, KLAC, KSYR, and KROQ have an impact, especially in North County.
See the complete breakdown at San Diego Radio Ratings.
~~
Happy Birthday to Sonny West at KyXy radio. The morning host at 96.5 FM had a rough start to the year with a 100-percent blockage in his heart. Now seen frequently on the hiking trails of San Diego, this birthday is especially nice!
~~
A special thank you to Gayle Falkenthal who invited me to be on 1170 KCBQ last night. We put all things about radio, social media, and how to keep a show on the air — on the air. Hear Here. Thank you Gayle!

Where to begin ….
Cockroach! Jeff Dotseth rejoined the Xtra Sports 1360 airwaves earlier this week. Teamed up with Josh Rosenberg for the drive home, the on-air banter compliments the sports-talk in the afternoon. Yesterday, Nick Canepa joined in on the fun as Josh and Jeff talked all about sports from Padres, Clippers, and Aztecs. Nick gently ribbed Jeff was like a cockroach in radio always surviving and turning up on the airwaves. Noted: Nick made a draft round pick for the then-San Diego Clippers!
Podcasts of the show, along with Dan Patrick, and others, are available at XtraSports1360 web site.
~~
Yesterday, 101.5 KGB’s Chris Boyer was attacked by Chrissy Russo of Fox 5. The on-television and radio event was to show self defense. Chrissy sent out via Twitter this morning: “Boyer did a great job yesterday at our self defense demonstrations. A lot of peeps have been asking, it’s MMA Academy in Sorrento Valley.”
The only thing that could have saved him was Chainsaw’s Jack Bauer ….. When Google can’t find something, it asks Jack Bauer for help.
~~
Last week, Bob Bolinger returned to a familiar seat, desk, and office building in San Diego. He was named Senior Vice President and Market Manager in San Diego. Bob previously managed KyXy and Radio Sophie stations from 1998 to 2005. He also worked for Group W at KJQY 103.7 from 1984 to 1985.
Other changes at CBS San Diego has Tina Rifkin as the VP and Director of Sales for CBS in San Diego.
Returning this weekend to 103.7 is Cindy Pace and Tony Martin to the airwaves!
~~
Fred Rico will trade the Arizona sun for some nice beach weather. H was named as Program Director for Z-90 and Magic 92.5 stations. They are part of the Finest City Broadcasting group. See yesterday’s bulletin for more info.
~~
Liberty One Media announced the return of progressive media to San Diego at a gathering at the Veteran’s Memorial on Mount Soledad July 4th with supporters and the press attending. Liberty One announced that ‘pod-casts’ will begin production this September. Radio broadcasting is slated in January 2010 and promises a full lineup of San Diego and national progressive talk radio personalities.
“We are in discussions with several radio stations to secure a broadcasting frequency with the goal of securing a strong signal to reach from the border to Camp Pendleton,” said Sal Magallanez, Liberty One’s General Manager. “We will not have the same problems that plagued KLSD, with a weak signal that did not reach half the county.” He added, “We want Liberty One to be a community radio station. We are going to try things that have never been tried before.”
The group is requesting donations at Liberty Radio.
~~
Jon Elliott’s in the afternoon drive slot at San Diego AM 1700. Jon is soliciting a $10 monthly charge from listeners to keep his program on the air ….
Also at the top end of the AM dial: A Conversation with San Diego features Joe Bauer & Neil Senturia. The program starts at 5 a.m. and continues for four hours.

Last week’s memorial services had the City of the Angels as the center of the universe. Tommy Sablan of Star 94.1 did yeoman’s work of reporting last Tuesday from the Staples Center.
Tommy writes from his web page.
“The service was incredible and what I remember the most will always be at the end when the microphone came down a little and I was thinking Janet was going to say something to the crowd, but it was Michael’s 11 year old daughter Paris and the words and emotion that came out will always be remembered by me and millions of others.”
“The one thing cool about Tuesday’s Michael Jackson service was that a lot of radio and television stations called me to talk to them all across the country and in Canada, Australia, London, and more. I was literally on at least 26 shows Tuesday. BUT, the one thing that will make my mom really happy is that I did 3 radio stations on the island of Guam where my family is from and one TV station KUAM on Guam.
“I know my mom will be happy and proud when I tell her I was on the radio in Guam and on television. Each time I was on a show, I would mention my mom and my dad and how much Guam is part of my life.”
Also noted: Shotgun Tom Kelly, at KEARTH 101 presented one Michael Jackson fan passes to last Tuesday’s event. The memorial services had fans from around the world in Los Angeles.
~~
Today, PPM makes its mark in San Diego. Pre-Currency look have some interesting changes and trends for the market. Arbitron is rolling out the new way of rating the audience and for the first time, includes non-commercial stations, like KPBS-FM and KSDS, and also on-line audio streams.
Aribtron reports that the PPM system automatically reports audience exposure to inaudible codes embedded in a broadcast signal. The rating service is providing the PPM encoders free of charge and report PPM audience estimates for all FCC-licensed AM and FM radio stations.
~~
Also expected to make an announcement very soon are Tony & Kris and their return to radio. Where exactly is not known. Fans can follow them at MySpace.com.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
In San Diego, it’s sun, fun, beach, fair, mountains, BBQing, family, friends, and waiting from the night time to fall. See the complete list of fireworks from San Diego Travel Tips.
Thank you for the nearly ten years of reading SDRadio and see you on the radio over the weekend! Breaking news as it happens and next regularly scheduled column is Monday, July 6, 2009.

Lee Hacksaw Hamilton has hit a home run, scored a touchdown, and made a GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL this week. He has been filling in the morning show at XX Sports 1090. Lee’s been missing from the local airwaves, but has been busy on Sirius/XM Satellite radio and is one of the voices of the new football network this fall. Here’s hoping that there is room in the budget and schedule to have Lee back on the San Diego sports waves full time.
New appreciation for Cookie Chainsaw Randolph at 101.5 KGB. There’s a group of long time radio fans that take drink shots of espresso every time Chain says Jack Baurer on a reference to 24 comes up. The jitters last until lunch.

Update: The memorial service for Helmut Kerling is 3 p.m. on Sunday. The time was previously noted earlier. The service is open and will be at St. David’s Episcopal Church 5050 Milton St., San Diego, 92110
More family pets will run away from home on the 4th of July than during any other day of the year because of fireworks. Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages families to take a few simple precautions to make sure that their pets are safe during Independence Day fireworks celebrations.
HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, “Even if the fireworks are several miles away, the sound can terrify family pets. If they don’t have safe places to hide, or if there’s a way for them to run out a door or escape through a fence, your pet will be gone.”
HWAC offers a few suggestions for families to keep their pets safe this week.
* Do not take your pets along to the fireworks displays.
* Bring your pets indoors before fireworks displays begin.
* Make sure that your pets have access to their favorite “safe place” or find a quiet, comfortable, enclosed room where your pets can “hide” if they need to.
* If you go to a fireworks display and leave your pets at home alone, leave the radio or TV set on so there is some “normal” background noise.
“This is also a great time to make sure your pets are micro-chipped.” says Van Zante. “Many pets that run away during the fireworks escape by slipping out of their collars. A micro-chip will identify your pet if it ends up at a shelter.”
What if your pet escapes in spite of your efforts? “Search through your neighborhood right away…then keep it up. Don’t quit after a day or two. Check with the animal shelters and keep checking for several weeks. You can also post signs in your neighborhood, but the best thing to do is to make sure your pets never get out to begin with.”
For more information call Helen Woodward Animal Center at 858-756-4117 or visit the Center at 6461 El Apajo Road. For the location of all animal shelters in San Diego log on to www.animalcenter.org.
The adoptions department at Helen Woodward Animal Center will be open
regular hours…11 am to 6 pm…on the 4th of July.
