Last week, I blasted KOGO for their lack of coverage — for two weeks in a row — for not covering the Chula Vista Little League team at the 9 p.m. newscasts on a Sunday night. Yes, I understand that it was talked about earlier in the day during talk shows by various hosts. It was also pointed out in this day of smart phones, social media, the news gets out. Really? Drive your listeners away to other info sites? Never mind the majority of the listeners who do tune in as radio as their point of contact.

The medium is changing. For a majority of your listening audience, the newscasts are the focal point of getting the latest news, weather and sports in the casts. It adds further insult to the listener’s ears, it was reveled that the newscasts were prerecorded.

That’s a sham from a station that has a legacy of Golden Mikes.

What is going to happen when calamity strikes? It’s not an if, as ear witnessed this weekend on on KFI. When news broke on Sunday with the fire swath that darkened the skies of Los Angeles, the station responded. They responded in full force.

Meanwhile in San Diego what will happen when (not an if) calamity strikes in the middle of the night? Will the listeners be rewarded by hearing audio of your TV partner as described by the corporate plan? Will your news team, already stretched thin, be able to cover the county? Is this, as Cliff Albert wrote me, “No big deal.” Don’t let San Diego response be similar to what happened in Minot, North Dakota.

The calendar is moving into full fire season and it’s hoped this year will be a non-event. What about earthquake or weather? There is an obvious concern knowing that newscasts, being recorded in advance and “computer failures” may happen. Not a good feeling as the primary station for news and information as the designated Emergency Action Notification outlet. It’s no comfort the second station is 1360 KLSD.

All the silliness aside, give your listeners the assurance that San Diego’s News and Talk Station is that: a news and talk station that can be depended on. Give truth to the term live and local. Our lives may depend on it.

LA’s Mount Wilson was intact this morning. The support to fight the fires were focused on homes, and said the fire would “overrun” the area. As of this morning, the site is intact. The firefighters have Mount Wilson being overun by fire sometime today. Help to fight the raging fire, was on its way.

LA TV/FM towers in fire’s path; expect overun tonight

Breaking: Los Angeles TV and FM towers in harm’s way. Officials are expected to let fire burn through. There was some retardant placed at sunset tonight. Two firefighters were killed near the “Station Fire” tonight.

On Mount Wilson: “That site is the nerve center for most of communication in the Los Angeles area,” Station Fire Commander Mike Dietrich said. “It is not out of danger as we speak. Right now we are so early in the fire and this is a treacherous fire.”

FM 94/9’s morning man, Tommy Hough writes on his Facebook page about his drive home: “A sample of AM radio on the drive home: (Roger) Hedgecock is flame-throwing Ted Kennedy for allegedly screwing America on the day he died; John and Ken are calling state employees “slobs,” and whomever is guest-hosting Savage doesn’t even dispute a caller who claims Obama’s “60-closest advisors” are Communists. Some people find this to be entertaining, but many think this lunacy and vitriol is the basis for sound policy.”

(Roger is on KOGO, and John and Ken are on LA’s KFI.)

Today, A.J. and the Playhouse crew say good-bye to Channel 933. Starting Monday morning the Playhouse will move up the dial to 94.1 and A.J. in the morning premieres.

Shotgun Tom Kelly was named one of the top on-air hosts in Los Angeles by LARadio.com. He’s part of the KEARTH 101 team and chairs the afternoon drive. One of the comments to LARadio: “Keeps the Boss Radio flame burning with style.”

Shotgun, an El Cajon resident, got his start in America’s Finest City and worked at KCBQ, KOGO, KUSI, B-100 and other stations in and around San Diego.

Did you know that he had a part in the movie Deju Vue?

AM 540, which is operated by Mount Wilson Broadcasting out of Los Angeles, is in the process of changing. The format at 540 will be (if not already) Spanish language religious broadcasting. The format change is in response to the syndicator pulling key programming from the station. Laura Ingram will be heard on LA’s KFWB starting Sept. 8. Fans of her show in San Diego can listen via XM Satellite or on-line radio streaming.

Walrus sets up Beatles Concert!

THE WALRUS CELEBRATES THE BEATLES IN SAN DIEGO
 
On August 28th, 1965, The Beatles visited Balboa Stadium for their only San Diego Concert.  Thousands of San Diegans visited the stadium, and 105.7 The Walrus will relive the moment.  “Mason in The Morning” and Frank Anthony will recreate a “live” broadcast from the stadium backstage, and present a live Beatles Concert Friday afternoon at 5.  
 
“It really gives us the chance to use radio to it’s ultimate application-create the theater of the mind-and give our listeners the fun and excitement that must have been in the air 44 years ago Friday” sand Mason and Anthony.  
 
The concert features John, Paul, George and Ringo at the height of “Beatlemania” in The United States with songs like “She Loves You”, “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “Help” and a dozen more.  The Beatles toured the U.S. three times –and visited San Diego after spending 4 days in Hollywood.  It will be presented on “The Walrus” commercial free.
 
Mason hosts the Walrus Morning show, and Frank Anthony pilots the 12n-5pm hours on 105.7fm.  105.7 The Walrus plays “San Diego’s Greatest Hits” –the popular songs from the 60’s and 70’s at 105.7fm.​

* Outside company making a run at CBS Radio San Diego and possibly adding Lincoln Financial Radio for a five station cluster. If so, that would give the new company 96.5 KyXy, 103.7 Radio Sophie; along with FM 94/9, 98.1 KiFM, and 97.3 KSON.

* The JeffandJer.com remains the best place to get their official word. The blogs are updated daily, and the main page has the official low-down.

* Happy Birthday Tommy! He celebrated on Tuesday.

* Sophie has a Big Annoucement on Monday at 7:10 a.m. That makes two stations with buzz at the same time.

Cliff Albert answers my verbal jab at KOGO’s 9 p.m. Sunday news. The report did not have the victory of the Chula Vista Little League. Cliff writes: “These days the news often comes to all of us via twitter or Facebook. Look at what happened at the famous crash of that jet into Hudson River…twitter had it before local news stations. That’s not to say we shouldn’t have it..but we do a lot of promoting of our website for info too… (because) sometimes it is there before the next news update.”

Cliff also said that newscasts were prepared with the victory, but for some reason the computers didn’t play it. He added, “We’re not perfect.”

Later this week, the station will be raising money for the team.

San Diego’s News and Talk Station KOGO has failed two weekends in a row. They dropped the ball on reporting about the advancement and the victories of the Chula Vista Little League team. As I ear witnessed Sunday night, the 9 p.m. news was from FOX News, FOX Entertainment before breaking to the sports report that included a golf and Padres update. The Chula Vista team’s victory was earlier in the afternoon and there was not a sentence on it. Just like the week prior, there was no report about the local sluggers in their quest for the Little League World Serie. No updates, no hint that they were playing. Classic fail to the News and Talk Station.

This would not have happened last year when there was a staffed news room. The audience is listening and expects more especially when it’s a local story gone good nationwide.

“Get the latest news from San Diego’s only News and Talk station.” #fail.

Kimberly King returns to TV today. The former reporter at NBC San Diego can be found as the morning weather specialist at KFMB-TV 8.

Jeff and Jer made the rounds on San Diego TV last Friday. As the pieces to the puzzle fall into place ….

* Chances of a move to KFMB-FM are about zero
* Jeff and Jer were holding the family together
* While indicating there are talking to several radio stations, the Showgram officially remains under contract until next Monday
* JeffandJer.com remains the focal point for official releases from the morning show.

Much to cover, the dust has not settled yet. Where to begin …

Tommy Update: Tommy Sablan tells SDRadio that the friendship with their former employer remains good. He said, “They let me in the building to get my guitar and my Shotgun Tom bobblehead! Jimmy Steele and I have been emailing.

Update Jeff and Jer went on FOX 5 this morning and the main message was: they live in San Diego and they work in San Diego. Jeff and Jer, holding a sign “Will DJ for Food” insisted that they work as a family and there was indication from the radio group that all of the “family” were not invited back. Not naming who, Jeff and Jer said they hope to announce shortly where they will land. They also brushed off a direct question from Chrissy Russo about Jack FM’s announcement on August 31.

They insisted that the press release from Clear Channel was sincere and they parting was friendly and the friendship remains.

Prior to Jeff and Jer on TV, Jimmy Steele went on the 94.1 airwaves and talked about the departed stars. Jimmy talked about the support that Jeff and Jer brought to the station and how they played a major role in the success of it. Jimmy said that bringing up A.J. and the Playhouse to the station good for Star 94.1. Plus, A.J.’s annual toy drive will be bigger this year.

Jeff and Jer left the air yesterday after there showgram on Star 94.1. As talks broke down, it was clear they were not going to have their talent on board, and with August 31 as their last day on the contract, their plug was pulled.

Jerry told Karla Peterson at the Union-Tribune, that the core team would be cut in the ‘new’ contract. “We are a family show done by a core family. We won’t do a show without our family. That’s unacceptable,” Jerry said.

With that, the big wait starts as rumbles and rumors start. Yesterday, Jack FM sent an announcement that at 7:10 a.m. on August 31. Then there is the ever grown noise that former boss and close friend Bob Bolinger has been put into play for the team.

What ever the case, Jeff and Jer, along with “Little” Tommy Sablan, Randy Hoag, Laura Cain, Delana Bennett and Emily Griffiths will remain on the airwaves in San Diego.

With the change, several things have happened at Clear Channel: First off Ruth 66 has been rehired and remains a paid part of the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw program at 101.5 KGB.

Her prayers were answered. To celebrate, she is going on vacation to Pennsylvania. Congratulations Ruthie and thanks for being part of the show!

With Jeff and Jer not on the air at 94.1, A.J.’s Playhouse moves up on the frequency dial. A.J. writes: “It’s true, the AJs Playhouse crew moves up the dial to Star 94.1 as “AJ in the Morning” on Monday August 31!”

There is some confirmation of the new programming at Channel 933: JohnJay & Rich, syndicated out of Clear Channel’s Kiss FM Phoenix probably will be tapped. The Arizona based morning show have several stations from Colorado Springs, Fresno, and others.

Rich is no stranger to the area, he was part of the DSC show for many years.

The San Diego Padres will honor Ted Leitner tonight at Petco Field. The radio play-by-play voice has been calling games for 30-years for the Padres. XX 1090 will air a 15-minute tribute to Ted at 3:45 p.m., today.

Ted came to the market in 1977. He was part of the KFMB-TV crew as sports anchor. He was offered a spot on the broadcast crew when Jerry Coleman was named manager of the team in 1980.

Of course, Jerry and Ted have been a team since 1980.

Jeff and Jer: moving from Star 94.1

Confirmed: Today was the last day for the Jeff and Jer Showgram at Star 94.1. Starting Monday, August 31, A.J.s Playhouse moves to Star FM.

Meanwhile: Jack FM says on Aug. 31, a major annoucement will happen.

Visit Jeff and Jer. They will announce shortly where they are going; and it will be in San Diego.

From Clear Channel: Beginning Monday, August 31, Star 94.1 will be home to “AJ in the Morning.” Hosted by AJ Machado, “AJ in the Morning,” currently heard on 93.3, has had an incredibly loyal following and proven top five ratings success with women and adults.  In addition to dominating the 18 - 34 audience, AJ is very dedicated to the San Diego community and organizations like Rady Children’s Hospital.  Star 94.1 is excited about the impact “AJ in the Morning” will have as the station continues to offer San Diego the very best in radio programming.

SDRadio starts tenth year of service today

Little did I know that ten years ago when SDRadio …. I would be writing about a medium that is living, breathing, and yes, changing.

Living: Radio has gone through a big change, not only in ownership, airwaves, but in broadcast. There have been a few changes in the radio skyline in the market. The airwaves too, have changed. HDRadio (which has to convince the consumer that the money is well spent) has competition not only from satellite … but from the eventual winner, of on-line streaming.

With wi-fi hi-fi coming — and it should be here in about two years — listening to local radio and Pandora will be easy at home or in the car. HDRadio will slowly die like AM stereo did about a decade ago. Satellite, an idea that was too big, but ended up to late, will slowly erode away.

Breathing: Today, Citadel, Clear Channel, and a few other big chains are singing Duncan Sheik’s Barely Breathing. A good friend in the industry told me that CBS radio will not exist in nine months. Clear Channel faces some hard financial decisions very soon. Citadel is one electrode short of a heart beat. Whose to blame? Government and the too fast in the buying expansion. The marketplace will sort it out, and the sad fact is those who love their job, may be locked out of their workspace as the company’s bottom line may be “out of business”.

Changing: It’s not all gloom and doom, as local radio is showing a strong heart beat. Compass Radio’s KPRi, Finest City Broadcasting,’s Z90, Magic 92.5, 91X; and BCA’s Walrus-FM, and XX Sports Radio are contenders. Add in Lincoln Financial’s KiFM, KSON, FM94/9 it’s all good radio.

Ad sales have improved, and with that, the bottom line of the local stations … have done the same. With more local money staying with local broadcasters, they’ll reap the benefits.

AM 540 will be making the transition and drop the current talk programs. The station’s main syndication company pulled prime programming to LA’s KFWB. It is expected to be all music by September 8. AM 540 and 1260 KGIL are simulcast.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Part-time position in promotions department for news/sports/music stations. Includes planning events, setting-up, staffing, and break down of events; driving promotional vehicles, and special assignments. Reports to Promotions Director.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
One + years experience in radio broadcasting and/or promotions marketing.
Ability to work flexible schedule (especially early mornings, evenings, and weekends). Strong written and verbal skills. Excellent organization skills with multi-tasking capabilities A customer service oriented person. Able to portray business appropriate image with respect to dress and demeanor. Must work independently, when necessary, and operate effectively in high-pressure, time-critical situations. Creative thinking and problem solving. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and an EXCELLENT driving record is essential.
Work effectively in a team environment. Ability to relate to and identify characteristics of target audience. Maintain a positive rapport with co-workers, vendors, and clients. Basic computer skills (word processing, e-mail, Internet navigation, etc.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Able to move, lift and carry up to 50-75+ pounds on occasion.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous working relationships with media contacts, public relations firms, and/or special events a plus. Moderate to advanced Computer Skills a plus (database, spreadsheets, graphics, audio, video, etc.) Familiarity with San Diego market and events Familiarity with Music/Sports/Talk format and current events Promotional vision that meets station’s goals.

KOGO-AM 600 welcomes Bob Kittle to the mics on Wednesday night. He was the editorial page editor that was “let go” from the Union-Tribune last week. He’ll host the Top Story talk show on Wednesday from from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mark Larson checked in from Bahrain last night. He was ready to fly out to the USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76. If the connections are right, he’ll be on live from the warship at 7 a.m.

Mikey is expected back at Rock 105.3-FM on Thursday. He had to take time out to attend to family members in the hospital … and he is missed from the airwaves.

AM 540 has dropped all talk radio programming. John Ziegler tells LARadio.com that he may never be a talk show host again. The talk syndication company pulled most of the programming from the station. Music is hear at AM 540 from Baja, and AM 1260 in the LA area.

AM 540 Changes Format

Talk is out and music is in at AM540 AM. John Ziegler, former mid-day host, confirms via email that the station has dropped talk and started music programming.

Nighttime host Jack Rice is not on the KOGO schedule. He is in Washington D.C., and is heard on Air America from noon to 3 p.m. (ET). Last week, various hosts were filling in at KOGO, including Clint August.

Tonight, Lou Pate hits the mic at 6 p.m. Lou was previously in San Diego as Stacy Taylor’s producer at KSDO. Lou can be heard weekends at Denver’s KOA radio.

Sources from Washington, D.C., indicate that Jack will not “likely return to AM 600’s schedule” as his radio and TV career is taking off in the D.C. area. He has been a regular on MSNBC, FOX, and CNN. Jack was previously with WCCO-AM radio in the Twin Cities.

John Dean producer for and heard on the Ray Lucia financial show, completed a half marathon on Sunday.

John writes, “Finished the AFC Half Marathon 1:47:58 on Sunday. Decided not to take first place, and very courteously let 993 others finish ahead of me.”

John has style; always thinking about others.

Tony Randall and Kris Rochester are expected to be on air in Nashville, Tennessee next month. The former morning men at US 95.7 (now New Country 95.7) were heard on the radio last year.

The San Diego Animal Support Foundation is sponsoring a drive to adopt big dogs! Those are pooches that will be 50-pounds are more. The event will be at Fiesta Island across from the fenced off-leash area tomorrow from 11 a.m., to 3 p.m.

KGB’s Shelly Dunn and Coe Lewis will be on hand Saturday for the event.

“When it comes to dogs… SIZE MATTERS! If you love big dogs, join us on Fiesta Island for a very special adoption event featuring BIG DOGS ONLY (50-pounds or more), and puppies that will eventually be big dogs! This is an ANNUAL event, bringing together 18+ legitimate, local non-profit rescue agencies and shelters, featuring more than 100 large dogs all in one place!

“Three years ago, this collaborative adoption event was developed to attract people who prefer larger breeds, bringing them to one place where they can find their perfect dog among hundreds of big dogs. Arby braggin’ rights: Magic 92.5 ranks number one in San Diego! Morning man Jagger writes: “Magic 92.5 rises to the # 1 radio station in San Diego! We have a great crew here!!! Having fun and creating great radio!” Very nicely done to the entire staff and management of XHRM-FM.

Classic hits The Walrus is in 7th place in the July PPM readings, according to Arbitron. The initial release had one news site confusing the call letters for FM with the AM station.

Country Wars: KSON remains the country king in the county. KUSS-New Country has some distance in overall listener ship.

Alternative: FM 94/9 continues to out distance 91X.

Jack FM remains strong in the market. The “Play What We Want” station continues to hold even after essentially removing the morning show.

KPBS is within striking distance of KOGO. The NPR station for the county is emphasizing news and talk on the FM dial.

Traffic to me: Earlier this week I had that “Kevin (Dean) remains the best traffic reporter in the county.” The KyXy morning co-host stepped into the big chair on Monday. I stand by the comments and also found out how many readers are in Clear Channel Traffic …. all of them. (Thanks for the email John, Jen, and others.)

All of you should be the best traffic reporter in the county as your captive voice makes decisions. These decisions may save time. All of you have a greater responsibility than you can possibly not fathom. Drivers weep when stuck in traffic, and curse the roadways. You have that luxury and hopefully the time to get all corners of the county covered in the allotment of time while juggling various stations across the radio dial. Drivers want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about they want you on that air — and drivers need you on the air with the current information.

Traffic reporters use words like “clogged,” “slow,” “sig-alert.” Reporters use these words as the backbone of a commute defending the drive. Commuters want answers, they want the truth in the drive. They can handle the truth even while beating the steering wheel.

Some would rather that all you traffic reporters just said “thank you” and went on your way. However for a majority of commuters, I say “Thank You” and salute you from the 78/15 or the 125/94, and at the Otay Mesa mess. Otherwise, tell those complainers that it is suggested they pick up a microphone and stand the post.

1170 KCBQ remains the only 50,000 watt station in the daytime for the San Diego market. Prior to the present location north of Lakeside, KCBQ beamed far and wide from six towers on the western edge of Santee. More than a landmark, it was a place that rock and roll, country, and personality driven radio. The 50,000 watt transmitter drove those six towers to full efficiency.

Also on the FM side, KCBQ was the first home of Mark Jagger. After ownership change, Mark was the Pirate Boy at Star 100.7 before taking on afternoon drives with Kristi.

KCBQ was the long-time of of San Diego’s own Shotgun Tom Kelly. He’s pictured at the KCBQ studios in Today, Shotgun is at another legendary station, KEARTH 101 from Los Angeles.
