July Ratings Rants

July’s ratings were released today and there’s Magic at the top: 92.5 FM climbs to the top with Channel 933 close behind. KyXy is third ahead of Star 94.1 FM.

Rounding up fifth is news/talk KOGO.

Noted: the Walrus FM dived in July shearing more than half while sister station XX1090 had more ears. Main reason: Padres bats woke up.

See the results at Radio-Info.com.

clint.jpgClint August steps in the Rice area of KOGO tonight. The former hard rocker trades radio to be a great talker at AM 600 tonight. Jack Rice is on vacation this week and Clint was asked to fill in. He was heard last week filling in from Chip Franklin, and on Tuesday for Jack. Clint will be on from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, and in HDRadio where available.

mark_larson.jpg1170 KCBQ’s Mark Larson writes, “(I have) lots to do before we fly out to the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) in the Middle East next week, supporting our sailors and Marines taking the fight to the Taliban!

Mark is guest-hosting on Hugh Hewitt’s show this Friday starting at 3 p.m. He’ll be on 1170 AM and over 150 stations across the USA. Before he packs his bags and the trunk of knowledge, he’ll also appear on KUSI-TV Friday morning. He’ll file reports on KUSI TV from the USS Ronald Reagan next week.

laura.jpgGood Doctor: Dr. Laura Schlessinger moves from KFI-AM to KFWB in Los Angeles on September 8. The unexpected winner in this may be our very own KOGO-AM 600. Why? The signal from the 5,000 watt station hugs the coast line and has a very listenable range to Santa Barbara and beyond. Especially in Orange County, KOGO could pick up listeners as the dial turn from 640 to 600 is easier than finding 980 in the sea of AM stations that fills Los Angeles. Stay Tuned.

The Union-Tribune cut over 100 dedicated newspaper staff from their rolls yesterday.

Thank YOU for making SDRadio part of your internet day. See YOU on the radio today and when news breaks … please use WD-40 and duct tape.

KCBQ Morning Man Heads West To Be East Again

ntr.png San Diego Blog News Add to Technorati Favoritessdtips.jpg sdbm-thumb.jpg

Lower your streaming costs - MyServer.org makes special offer to SDRadio readers

Mark Larson on the RONALD REAGANKCBQ’s Mark Larson returns trip to the Middle East war theater to re-join the San Diego-based USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). He’ll head west so his morning radio show will originate from the ship beginning Monday.

The ship and its Strike Group set out on a four month deployment in late May from San Diego and is in support ofthe people of Afghanistan, the U.S. Marines and coalition forces in Southern Afghanistan. More than 6,000 sailors are taking part in the assignment, and they’re backed by thousands of family members on the home front in San Diego.

This is Mark’s third trip to the area, having covered Iraq and the region in 2005 and on board the Reagan in the Persian Gulf during the ship’s maiden deployment in 2006. His radio broadcasts were the first long form talk shows from a Navy ship in a war zone, and he continued to make history with programs direct from Afghanistan.

These special broadcasts are made possible through a partnership with the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The San Diego Air & Space Technology Center is official title sponsor for the project. The Museum’s President & CEO (and former Navy pilot) Jim Kidrick will accompany Mark on the trip and will be part of the daily radio programs.

mark_apolloevent.jpg “First and foremost,” notes Larson, “this is all about saluting everyone in the military, all branches. The Reagan Strike Group represents the fine quality of people serving America. I love this opportunity to share what they’re doing, put today’s news into context and perspective, and to encourage those who lay it all on the line every day.” He adds, “These special broadcasts also help connect those who are deployed with their loved ones back at home. It’s an honor to be part of this.”

Mark has a long history with the USS Ronald Reagan, going back to the ship’s commissioning in 2003 and continuing when it was home ported in San Diego the following year. He is also an Honorary Plankowner, signifying his connection with the original crew. (Top Picture: Then Captain (now Rear Admiral) Terry Kraft, in a 2006 photo from the USS Ronald Reagan on duty in the Middle East.)

The KCBQ broadcasts will air from 7-9 a.m., on August 19, 20, 21 and 24. There will also be special live progress reports on the way to and from the region.

(Bottom Picture: Neil Armstrong who rarely does public appearances and in an extreme rare chance, the first and last men on the moon were in San Diego recently. Alan Bean (Apollo 12 and set record in space on Skylab); Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11, first man to walk on the moon), Mark (still grounded and was master of ceremonies at an event) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 & 17; last man on the moon).)

KOGO’s Phil Farrar Earns National Radio Award

phil.jpgThat’s four national radio awards for veteran news anchor and reporter Phil Farrar of AM 600 KOGO. Phil has captured the National Association of Black Journalists award for Radio-Sports Reporting. Phil was presented the award in Tampa Saturday night during the NABJ’s black tie “Salute to Excellence Gala.”

The long time San Diego reporter has won nearly three dozen awards in his career was honored for a story he did on Willie O’Ree. In 2008, O’Ree was recognized by the National Hockey League on the 50th anniversary of his first game as the first man of color to play in the NHL. O’Ree only played two games in 1958 with the Boston Bruins. He would get the call again in 1962 and came up from the minor leagues to play in 43-games. O’Ree eventually ended his career here in San Diego, playing a majority of his games with the San Diego Gulls before retiring with the San Diego Hawks.

Phil also won an award from the critically acclaimed San Diego Society of Professional Journalists, a first place finish from the distinguished San Diego Press Club and top honors from the Radio and Television News Association’s prestigious Golden Mike award for his story on living legend Willie O’Ree.

Phil has a background in radio and television. In the late 1980s and early 90s he worked at NBC and CBS in Chicago.

Radio Dial: AM 540 is loosing some programming. Yesterday’s announcement of LA’s KFWB started the change. AM 540 will be loosing Laura Ingraham and other TRN programming to the CBS station.

However the cast will be different, according to LARadio.com. Sheron Bellio from KLAC will produce the program. John and Ken will start one hour earlier in afternoon drive.

The shuffle will be September 8, stay tuned, this story may change.

Lower your streaming costs - MyServer.org makes special offer to SDRadio readers

Welcome to SDRadio for Monday, August 10, 2009. This report is in ((stereo)) where available.

Update: Clint August will be filling in for KOGO’s Jack Rice tonight and Thursday. He’ll start at 6 p.m. for a two hour show. Clint has been invited back for Thursday’s edition as well.

Laura Schlessinger, the doctor of good advice, is leaving KFI. She’ll move over to CBS’ KFWB in the City of the Angels on September 8. Her company recently signed a long term media deal with Talk Radio Network. The network is the home of mostly-conservative hosts such as Michael Weiner (Savage), Rusty Humphries, and Jerry Doyle. She is in her 16th year of syndication after a successful run at KFI. Dr. Laura is heard around the world on Armed Forces Radio and also on XM satellite. Her show is the third most listened to in the U.S.

kevin_cindy2.jpgCindy Pace and Kevin Dean stepped into the KyXy studios last Friday morning. They held down the fort as Sonny West and Susan DeVincent had the day off. Cindy is heard weekends at sister station Radio Sophie, and Kevin remains the best traffic reporter in the county.

        ~~

With news reports coming in from KFI this was bound to happen. English is a language that can separate us all. Weekend announcer Ginger Chan filed a report that was heard on KOGO-AM 600. When the report on AM 600 came to weather — Ginger had Southland Weather for San Diego. I’ve asked this question before: Where does Southland end and Southern California begin? Southland refers to the Los Angeles area. Southern California is every where else in this part of the state. This is where reports from out of area fall short by “moving” our area a bit north. I’m not faulting Ginger Chan, nor KFI on this, the fault is here; except the now-scarce KOGO news room doesn’t have a weekend person to answer the phone ….

        ~~

1210 KPRZ, K-Praise is inviting Pastors and Ministry leaders from all around the San Diego county to the 4th Annual Pastors Appreciation Luncheon. This FREE special event is in honor of the tireless service they perform each and every day. The event is scheduled for October 29. See KPRZ.com.

        ~~

jeffjerfair-mono.jpgSan Diego’s own Jeff and Jer are in the last weeks of their current contract at Star 94.1. Reports from Texas have the morning crew turning down the first offer from Clear Channel Communications. This is a common practice to dismiss the first offer. Who knows where Jeff, Jer, Tommy, Randy, Laura, and Delana will be in September. It’s a Stay Tuned time ….
(Photo from the Raised On Radio display at the San Diego County Fair.)
        ~~

CBS Portland was sold over the weekend. The four station $40 million deal was a far cry of what the stations were bought for. The new holder will be Alpha Company and owned by Larry Wilson. CBS Radio is on the record to shed stations in smaller markets, or in markets, like San Diego, where they do not have a significant reach. The two stations are KyXy, and Radio Sophie. CBS’ KNX and KEARTH 101 show up in ratings in San Diego. Stay tuned!

clintaugust.jpgClint August has been a fixture in San Diego Radio for the past eleven years. He started out as a morning show side kick doing impersonation prank phone calls and crazy street stunts for almost seven years. His most current on-air position was on Rock 105.3 as an afternoon co-host.

Yesterday, he filled in for the vacationing Chip Franklin at KOGO-AM 600. Never missing a beat with news babe LaDona Harvey and bringing in financial expert George Chamberlain, Clint’s four hour radio extravaganza was a perfect fit for the usual listeners of the station.
