Letters to SDRadio:
Hey Chris,
As you well know, radio has always been about hype. Hey! It works!
When I was a kid, one of the local D-Js “locked himself” in the studio and played “The Twist” (Chubby Checker) continuously until — oh, I don’t know — somebody noticed!
A very effective promotion (which I was never part of) involved stations buying newspapers ads that read, “We sincerely apologize for the remarks made earlier today on our station by the morning team. They certainly do not reflect the views of the management of XXXX, and we are truly sorry. The persons responsible have been appropriately reprimanded.”
Of course, absolutely nothing untoward had been broadcast. But you can bet, the world tuned in the following day!!
A wise friend of mine once said, “it’s not what you do, it’s what you call what you do that matters.”
Much of radio remains the on-air circus side-show (”Step right up, see the amazing man eating chicken!!”) And the programs that are not part of the scam…are struggling.
Sad but true.
Clark Anthony
