KPBS is pleased to announce a gift of $2.5 million from Joan and Irwin Jacobs. This generous donation will fund an extensive remodel of the KPBS newsroom to create an interactive space for the future – with an emphasis on multimedia convergence and multiple platforms.
“Joan and I have been longterm supporters of KPBS. We are enthusiastic about this project to further enhance the ability of its staff to cover local news,” said Irwin Jacobs, co-founder and former chairman of Qualcomm. “KPBS plays a key role in journalism in San Diego and we applaud its commitment to quality and to the expanded application of multimedia to inform our community.”
When KPBS moved into the Copley Telecommunications Center in 1995, the station had a small radio news staff. But over the past 14 years, KPBS has added TV and Online news and content teams. Currently, the reporters, writers, producers and support staff are scattered throughout the building.
“It was time we created a physical environment where all news and content producers can work collaboratively,” said Tom Karlo, KPBS General Manager. “KPBS is honored to receive such a generous contribution that truly endorses our commitment to local journalism. Over the past few years we’ve converged our TV, Radio and Web teams – but this gift helps us create a dynamic workspace that will allow the unified news team to flourish and produce exceptional journalism for the San Diego Community.”
KPBS is currently working on selecting a design firm who will help transform the existing upstairs space within the KPBS building. The goal is to begin construction after the first of the year with a targeted completion date in the fall of 2010 – around the same time KPBS will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.
KPBS is a public service of San Diego State University, serving the region with TV, Radio and Internet content that is educational as well as entertaining—and free of commercial interruption.

Mark Larson, morning host at KCBQ-AM 1170 recently completed a trip to the war theater in the waters off of Pakistan. The San Diego based USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76 is in Indian Ocean in support of the effort in Afghanistan.
While there, Mark was broadcasting live on KCBQ and also filed reports.
Every day for hours, Carrier Airwing 14 launches an endless stream of F/A 18’s heading out to support our Marines on the ground, especially in Helmand Province and Kandahar, Afghanistan. This ship and its Strike Group are essential in what they’re doing, and these actions put these people right in the midst of current news. God bless them, and Godspeed. Afghanistan and this region are very hot this week (and not just the temperature).

Mark also adds that keeping the ship going requires many at sea replenishes. “Every seven days or so the Reagan is replenished with everything from food to parts to a MILLION gallons of jet fuel. And with today’s air operations supporting our Marines nearby in Afghanistan, the fuel’s at a premium in importance. It’s impressive to see how the supply ship (USS Rainier) comes along side, with both vessels keeping pace while underway (about 15+ knots or so) as supplies are shuttled across by cable, fuel line and helicopter.”

KCBQ’s Mark Larson is hanging out in space again. He’ll MC this Friday and Saturday’s “Race to the Moon” celebration, featuring a dozen American astronauts and a salute to our country’s Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. 2009 has been a year of many space milestones, including the 40th anniversary of man’s first lunar landing.
Friday night at the San DIego Air & Space Museum (where Larson also serves on the Board of Directors), a special reception will also feature a candid forum with all the astronauts, including three moon walkers. Mark is also moderator of the event.
Saturday evening the event continues with a gala awards dinner onboard the USS Midway on San Diego Bay. The new NASA Administrator (and space shuttle astronaut) Charlie Bolden will also be part of the festivities. For tickets and information, including the list of VIP’s attending, visit www.racetothemoonsd.org
Here’s video Larson at a recent Air & Space event commorating Apollo 8, introducing the usually reclusive first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong:

Washington Times Radio Hits New Heights In Southern California Skies Sept. 3
Host Rick Amato broadcasts from U.S.’s only Zeppelin using new wireless technology
Washington Times Radio host Rick Amato takes his show to new heights on today – literally, broadcasting for the first time ever from the only Zeppelin in the United States high in the skies above Southern California.
A new wireless technology will ricochet from San Diego, California up to Oregon and back to the Washington D.C. studios of Washington Times Radio for Rick’s report. The live remote signal will originate from the flight deck of the only Zeppelin within the United States, and the first to fly American skies in over 70 years.
Amato’s entire show will air on wsRadio.com from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, September 3rd and on 40 radio stations across the United States. It will also be available for download and listening on demand at www.amatotalk.com
The special report is called “The Golden State from Above.” Some have called California ungovernable. The state is near bankruptcy. Yet it is home some of the country’s most beautiful natural resources and most educated work forces. As California goes, so goes America. What does California tell us about America’s future? Join Rick and his guests from the worlds of politics, business and entertainment as they examine this issue.
Among the show’s scheduled guests: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (pending), Hollywood actor Robert Davi, Shawn Steel of the Republican National Committee, and California State Board of Equalization board member Michelle Steel, plus others to be announced.
The special broadcast will also mark the launch of wsRadioDC, a rare expansion of news and information programming during a time of budgetary caution. Later this year, a whole new line-up of shows will feature diverse individuals, associations, political groups and organizations hosting their own one-hour weekly talk shows. The new media of “Internet Talk Radio” will allow them to interact and communicate globally. Produced by wsRadio.com, the shows will broadcast live on the Internet, and then be archived and podcast on iTunes for 24/7 listening on demand.

Two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank will serve as the 2009 ambassador when the 11th annual, San Diego-based Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive kicks off October 1. Swank will share her personal experience with pet adoption and encourage families to find their new best friends this holiday season by visiting animal shelters and pet rescue groups. Along with founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center and nearly 3,500 participating animal organizations worldwide, the program has set a goal to find loving families for 1.5 million pets between Oct. 1, 2009 and Jan. 5, 2010.
“I’m so proud to be working with Iams Home 4 the Holidays to help raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption,” said Hilary Swank. “Last year, the program’s adoption goal was to get 1 million pets adopted in just three months, but this year the goal is even bigger – we’re on a mission to find loving families for 1.5 million orphaned pets between Oct 1st and January 4th.”
Swank has adopted many pets throughout her life, including her two dogs Karoo and Rumi. She rescued Karoo from the side of a road while filming in South Africa a few years ago and adopted Rumi last fall from a participating IH4TH shelter in Los Angeles.
“Now more than ever orphaned animals need our help and who better to give them a voice than Hilary?” said Mike Arms, founder of Iams Home 4 the Holidays and President of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “Along with Hilary and her inspiration, our 3,500 animal organizations are working to shine a big spotlight on the need to help the nearly 8 million homeless pets in our country, and are committed to helping raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption.”
