(Many radio critics' expertise is limited to having radios in their cars. Whooop-te-doo!) We all watched you grow in your knowledge of our industry. You called and asked the right questions...sometimes even before we knew the answers. You respected us for what we did and took us to task...honestly and openly...when you disagreed. I remember a call from a Program Director at a competing station asking about a rumor. He was pretty certain it was accurate, but said, "Chris Carmichael didn't report it...so I'm not sure." THAT was when I knew you had earned the respect you deserved. Thank you for your love and respect of the radio industry. Thank you for keeping us honest. Thank you for saying the things that need to be said. Congratulations on a decade of success. In the 1950s and 60's..the Los Angeles Times had a daily "Southland" page, that featured news from Santa Barbra to San Diego.....and actually was meant to cover all news outside of LA and Orange Counties. For a while, legendary KHJ changed from "Los Angeles weather..." to "Southland weather" so as to merge LA and OC into a simpler form. So, to me, the Southland is from SB to SD. Comment on Celebrating Helmut Kerling’s Life! by Tom Richard http://sdradio.net/2009/06/25/celebrating-helmut-kerlings-life/#comment-45947 Tom Richard Fri, 03 Jul 2009 21:33:46 +0000 http://sdradio.net/2009/06/25/celebrating-helmut-kerlings-life/#comment-45947 I worked with Gary at KYA-San Francisco in 1977 when I was doing an internship and he did the 4-8pm shift on the air. A great set of pipes and a true radio professional (except for a little Coors in the air booth). He always had great advice to give me. He also let me do a mic break on the air, introducing the number one requested song of the night which was "Star Wars" by Meco. I'd love to have that on tape. You probably know he was a big Stones fan "The best damned rock & roll band in the world!". Once he had his headphones on and turned the monitor up all the way while he played "Bitch". It was so loud, I had to leave the phone room. I even heard it outside. I worked with Gary at KYA-San Francisco in 1977 when I was doing an internship and he did the 4-8pm shift on the air. He was a consummate pro with a passion for radio seldom seen today. Having moved to San Diego from Sacramento, Gary took it upon himself to properly introduce me to Southern California. He took me to my first bull fight, talked me into trying street food from vendors in Tijuana, and of course ended the whole day with shots of tequila. Gary Cock-ere knew how to intimately communicate with his listeners. His talent will be sorely missed. I had the great pleasure of working with Gary Cocker at 13-K. It's superb, excellent quality. I had to explain to my young engineer Cameron Bradna what those "round things" on the mixing board were... old style potentiometers, or "pots" as we called them. Sheesh, do I sound like an old broad or what? Chris, saw Shotgun’s photo tonight when I was at the station. It’s superb, excellent quality. Comment on media headlines for friday, may 29, 2009 by Gayle Falkenthal http://sdradio.net/2009/05/29/media-headlines-for-friday-may-29-2009/#comment-40184 Gayle Falkenthal Fri, 29 May 2009 16:23:23 +0000 http://sdradio.net/2009/05/29/media-headlines-for-friday-may-29-2009/#comment-40184 I wouldn't call KCBQ "Christian conservative" just because Mark Larson is back on the airwaves. He's a talk host that happens to be Christian, yes. The station's slogan is "Intelligent Talk" and the content is much broader in range. Both Rick Amato and I featured marriage rights activists on the air this week and I had a gay couple on last night - and not in debates or antagonistic settings. Hardly "Christian conservative!" It's KCBQ's sister station, KPRZ AM, that is truly the conservative Christian station. I wouldn’t call KCBQ “Christian conservative” just because Mark Larson is back on the airwaves. Always enjoyed listening to him on the radio when I lived in Toronto. So nice to hear he is doing so well. I think the night I met him it was the Myrna Lorie show.
